Unifying Topic:
In the Curriculum:
Sixth grade common core requirements aren't necessarily geared towards poetry, but the standards can be met through poetry. The students have started developing the necessary skills and concepts by applying them to short stories. We will now apply those same skills and concepts to poetry. The poems that are featured are poems that the students can relate to, and they can reach students of different abilities and interests. Some of the poems that are used are bilingual, as the students are bilingual.
The Influence of Christian Values:
Content/Anticipated Student Learning - to be a Christian is to be a member of a society, and as a member of society it's important to try to understand the world around you. Reading poems helps us understand others, and analyzing them helps us understand others and ourselves. I hoped this unit would help students develop skills that they can use as members of a society.
Materials - poems were chosen based on their message. I wanted poems the students could relate to and that made the students think, as well as poems that talked about nature
Instructional and Management Strategies: I wanted my instructional strategies to reflect that each student is an image bearer with different strengths and backgrounds. Therefore, I knew I needed to teach in ways that could reach different students where they were instead of using a blanket format for teaching poetry.
